New York Giants Draft Analysis
The 2019 NFL Draft happened on the days of April 25th to April 27th. As a huge Giants fan I will be discussing how I feel about the draft picks the Giants selected also with me seeing the rookies in action after rookie minicamp having just concluded.

I will mainly be focusing on the draft picks from the first and third round. But, I will give a quick rundown on the rest of the draft picks. Giants seem to focus most of the picks that will improve the defense. Julian Love a great cornerback that can make big plays on the defensive end who many believe will be a day one starter for the Giants and with looking at rookie minicamp we will most likely be playing safety for the defense. Him being able to play that hybrid safety spot that Tyrann Mathieu was at for Giants defensive coordinator James Bettcher in Arizona. Ryan Connelly a very fast and athletic linebacker that the Giants need. They have just about struggled at the linebacker position since Antonio Pierce retiring in 2010. Darius Slayton a very athletic wide receiver with a lot of potential that Giants hope to be able to develop better route running ability. Last two rounds Giants added another corner and some help at the offensive line and defensive line as well.
Before I get to the Giants first round picks in which one, Daniel Jones, has been just about on Sportscenter and every other sports network since the draft. I want to start giving my thoughts and opinion on Oshane Ximines from the 3rd round. Ximines from Old Dominion is actually the first player from Old Dominion to be drafted. Edge rusher is position the Giants lacked especially after trading away Olivier Vernon to the Browns. I believe he could start and be a factor for the Giants but glaring problems I see from him is for one is that he is not really good with going up against the run. He gets off the line very quickly with a nice spin move as well, but him for him to be more of a complete player he needs to get better at defending the run. He can become just erratic when chaos happens during the run and may miss assignments on the outside. He also needs to be able to operate and be successful in a 3-4 defense.
For the first round I will be starting with cornerback Deandre Baker. I think Deandre Baker is the best cornerback in the NFL. Playing at Georgia he played tough competition with playing in the SEC and also being in the college football playoffs. He is a very physical corner that has only given up 2 touchdowns in two seasons. and has shutdown wide receivers such as Calvin Ridley and Deebo Samuel. But to get Deandre Baker, Giants needed to trade up for him. I just wonder would he have still been there in the 2nd round. But nevertheless, very excited to see Deandre Baker in Giants blue and white and to see him and Janoris Jenkins as our 1 and 2 corners on the season. Dexter Lawrence was the 17th pick in the draft. Nice huge DT that reminds me of Vince Wilfork from Clemson. He was a three-time all ACC during his time at Clemson. With Snacks Harrison gone for the Giants I think Lawrence can be a great replacement for him to pair up with Dalvin Tomlinson on the line. Even though I can see him playing more on the edge because of him being a much better pass rusher than Dalvin Tomlinson. Before the draft, I wanted the Giants to draft C, Garrett Bradbury from NC State. To improve the offense line and help to protect Eli and better blocking for the Giants superstar Saquon. But, still great pick for the Giants, fills a need that was very much so needed.
“With the 6th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft the New York Giants select, Daniel Jones, quarterback, Duke.” I’ll just say that I had many mixed emotions when I heard about this. Almost ruined my time while watching Avengers: Endgame. But, I’m going to be very positive on Daniel Jones on this one. Daniel Jones played very well at Duke and has showed the ability to quickly read defensive formations this early on his career. He has a very upside and vits very well within the offense Pat Shurmur runs. His mobility will be huge key for the offense and nice change of pace leaving from the Eli Manning era. Some cons I do have is that even with him able to read a defense from the whiteboard, it doesn’t usually show up on the field and he is prone to make mistakes because of his decision making. The one game you can see this poor decision making is him only passing for 145 yards in a 59-7 lose to Wake Forest this past season. I think just about everyone admit that this is a huge reach on the Giants and Gettleman on this one. He has potential and may be good especially with sitting behind Eli. I just don’t understand the need to get him at the 6th. Gettleman remains adamant that Daniel Jones was on many teams draft board and would’ve not been there at the 17th or later. I disagree with him, but let’s just see what happens in the future. Before the draft, I wanted the Giants to load up for defense at the 6th. Getting Josh Allen I believe would be best to get at the 6th and trade for Josh Rosen. Even though the Cardinals have given up on him, I still believe that he can be a great quarterback. Especially, last season him having Mike McCoy as an offensive coordinator who even made hall of fame quarterback, Philip Rivers look bad. Also adding the worst offensive line in the league last season, Rosen wasn’t given the opportunity to truly show his full potential and ability as a quarterback in the league.
With a very loaded class at the quarterback position next year, Giants take their man this year with Daniel Jones. Even though I’m not sold on him and will probably bite the Giants for years to come, I hope Daniel Jones has an amazing hall of fame career for the Giants. Make all Giants fans and everyone else wrong about you Daniel Jones. If Daniel Jones pick doesn’t work out may just be the end of Dave Gettleman’s time with the Giants.
At the end of all of this, I am very excited to see the New York Giants as a team this year. With no Odell Beckham Jr. now, it’s going to be interesting to see this team in action. I think this team may shock many and will not be the worst team in the league. Good luck to all the rookies and everyone else on the team this upcoming season. Go Big Blue!
